Many people are familiar with spring and summer allergies, but what about fall allergies? Surprisingly, many people suffer from fall allergies just as much as they do in the spring. While the symptoms are similar, the triggers are different. So, if you’re suffering this fall from sneezing, watery-eyes, coughing, and runny-nose, you’re probably suffering from fall allergies.
Fall allergies are triggered by many things, but the largest trigger is ragweed. Ragweed pollen in the air can last until September and October and many people who suffer from spring plants are also affected by this pollen. Other triggers include mold and dust mites. Mold can grow in basements, bathrooms, and wet spots outside of your home. Piles of raked leaves are a perfect home for mold to grow. Dust mites can be an issue in the fall because they get stirred up when you first turn on your heating system in your home.
If you find yourself suffering from symptoms because of these triggers, there are some ways to find relief. Aside from consulting a doctor to find out which medications can relieve you of your symptoms, there are also some home remedies you can try. While pollen is at its peak, try to stay inside as much as possible, with windows and doors closed. Additionally, before you turn on your heat for the first time of the season, make sure you clean your vents and change your filter. You can also use a dehumidifier in your home. Lastly, if you are raking leaves outside, you can wear a mask so you are less likely to breathe in mold spores.
